Facelift

What is Facelift?

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to restore a youthful appearance to the face and neck. This surgery can reduce sagging skin, smooth deep folds along the cheeks and jawline, and tighten underlying tissues, providing a more contoured and refreshed look. A neck lift is often performed simultaneously to address excess fat and loose skin in the neck area.

Key points

Why Consider a Facelift?

Aging changes the skin and facial tissues. Skin loses elasticity, fat distribution shifts, and the jawline and cheeks can sag. A face-lift can correct these issues, including:

  • Sagging cheeks and jowls.

  • Excess skin around the lower jawline.

  • Deep nasolabial folds (from the nose to mouth corners).

  • Loose skin and fat in the neck (if combined with a neck lift).

Facelifts are not suitable for fine wrinkles, minor creases, or uneven skin tone.

Risks and Complications

  1. Face lift surgery is generally safe, but carries potential risks. Common complications include:

    • Hematoma: blood accumulation under the skin, often within 24 hours, usually treated with drainage.

    • Scarring: incisions leave permanent scars, typically hidden along the hairline and ear contours.

    • Nerve injury: rare, may cause temporary or permanent numbness or muscle weakness.

    • Hair loss: temporary or permanent hair loss near incisions.

    • Skin loss: rare interruption of blood supply can lead to tissue loss.

Other risks include: bleeding, infection, and anesthesia reactions. Factors increasing risk include smoking, uncontrolled medical conditions, and blood-thinning medications and others.

Preparing for Surgery

During your consultation, I will:

  • Review your medical history, medications, and previous surgeries.

  • Examine your face, skin quality, bone structure, and fat distribution.

  • Discuss your goals and expectations.

  • Recommend additional procedures if needed, like a neck lift or eyelid surgery.

Before surgery, patients may need to:

  • Stop medications or supplements that thin blood.

  • Wash hair and face with antiseptic soap.

  • Arrange transportation and assistance for recovery.

The Procedure

Facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Steps of the face-lift:

  1. Make incisions based on the chosen technique (traditional, limited, or neck-lift incision).

  2. Lift and reposition facial tissues and SMAS layer.

  3. Remove excess skin.

  4. Close incisions with fine sutures.

The procedure typically lasts 3–6 hours but may be longer if combined with other cosmetic surgeries.

Recovery

Post-operative care includes:

  • Wearing bandages or a compression garment.

  • Managing mild to moderate pain and swelling.

  • Avoiding strenuous activity, sun exposure, and makeup for the initial recovery period.

Follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring healing, removing drains or sutures, and ensuring proper recovery. Most patients can resume normal daily activities within 2–3 weeks, while complete healing and final results may take several months.

Results

A face-lift can significantly improve the contour and youthfulness of your face and neck. While results are long-lasting, natural aging will continue, and effects typically last around 10 years. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps prolong results.

When to Contact Your Surgeon

Seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe or asymmetric swelling or pain.

  • Excessive bleeding or drainage.

  • Fever or signs of infection.

During surgery, anesthesia prevents pain. Mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common during recovery and can be managed with medication.

Most patients resume normal activities within 2–3 weeks. Full healing and final results can take several months.

No. Face-lifts improve sagging and contour but do not treat fine lines, wrinkles, or skin pigmentation issues. Additional treatments like: fillers, laser resurfacing, or chemical peels may be recommended.
